Appearance: Misa is a teen idol. Guys who see her with Light usually envy the boy; she's generally considered very attractive and obviously a prize catch for her fame. She's blonde and 'cute', but usually prefers the gothic-lolita fashion of dressing when given a choice.
At 4'9" she is diminutive; at 80 lbs she is even more so. This helps her in her career but would make any physical training an obvious challenge.
Personality: Misa has the demeanor of a very typical teenage girl in many ways. She is outgoing, bubbly, and friendly. She is also totally devoted to her boyfriend and jealous of others' attentions to him, usually expressed in cattiness.
She has loyalty, but this seems to extend itself only to Light ultimately at this point. She is willing to do anything he tells her, but is very heartless towards others. She is able to casually consider the murder of even her friends - offering to kill one if Light wants her to. When she briefly considers even trying to kill her shinigami, Rem, the idea seems to come as a whim and she seems decidedly unconcerned that Rem saw through this, shrugging it off when she is informed it will not be possible for her to do.
Misa's primary motivation for helping Light is the hope of being able to settle down into a new life with him once his goal of a new world order has been achieved. Thus even the most distasteful tasks he gives her are seen as stepping stones on this road - never taking into the account the possibility he will not follow through. Even her one moment of strength against him is to bring herself closer to him, when she allows Rem to threaten to kill Light if he does not make Misa happy - but of course once they are alone, she asks Rem not to really kill the boy.
Abilities/Strengths: Misa is attractive enough and skilled enough at singing, dancing or choreography as well as acting, that she maintains a modeling and 'idol' career in these pursuits. She is also skilled in 'feminine wiles', her primary mode of persuasion being mild seduction. She is a good enough actress to fool many people, including L, the detective on Light's trail.
Weapons: Misa is not built for physical fighting, but has been known to pretend to seduce men on occasion to get what she needs from them for Light - usually information or cooperation.
She also retains a copy of the Death Note - an implement that allows her to kill anyone by writing their name in it. She has skirted the usual need to learn the victim's name by 'trading eyes' with a Shinigami; this allows her to see the person's name and remaining lifespan as long as she sees their face or knows it, and as long as they themselves do not also have a Note.
Weaknesses: her blind devotion to Light makes Misa do anything he tells her, no matter how heinous a crime it might turn out to be. She is unable to recognize that he is using her.
History:
Misa Amane was a girl grieving when her parents were murdered. Kira - a strange force naming itself or himself Justice - passes judgment on the murderer by killing him in turn. Misa becomes a rabid Kira-supporter and sets out to discover his identity and offer herself in love or even slavitude to him.
Before long, another criminal encounter changes Misa's life forever. As a well-known model, it shouldn't have been too shocking that she gained a few rabid fans - one of which turned stalker. A shinigami, a god of death, happens to see the scene as he, too, had taken to watching Misa. Enchanted by the pretty girl and upset at the thought of her lifespan being cut off so young for such an unfair reason, he kills the stalker - and dies himself. Shinigami are not allowed to become attached to humans or reverse their role as bringers-of-death by extending one in that manner.
Out of respect for the dead shinigami, a second shinigami named Rem gives Misa the now-ownerless Death Note: a copy of the notebook all shinigami carry to take human life in order to extend their own by writing the victim's name in it. For a human, the book retains the same power of killing. Misa also - or perhaps to help her in the goal of finding and supporting Kira - has 'traded eyes' with Rem, a deal that allows her to see names and lifespans of other humans if she sees or knows their faces in exchange for half of her own remaining life.
When she finds that Kira is Light Yagami, Light must make Misa his and keep her under control to protect his own position. He finally agrees to become her boyfriend - to keep a watch on her - and generally uses her for his own purposes, especially since she has the shinigami eyes. Misa is able to use these to carry out judgments Light cannot, throwing suspicion off of him.
Once Light orders Misa to give up her ownership of the Note, she does so. When she is later cleared to retrieve it, she regains the Death Note but not the Eyes - and so trades again, this time with Light's shinigami, Ryuk. Her life is halved and now halved again, but she retains her full powers...
...and is thrust suddenly into Econtra.
